George Byron Peraza-Smith is a gerontological nurse practitioner that specializes in primary care and long term care. He received his BSN and MSN in Nursing Administration at The University of Texas Medical Branch, Post-Masters GNP Certificate at University of South Florida, and DNP in Nursing Education at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Smith’s research focuses on the NPs role in the assessment and management of persistent pain in older adults. He is an Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Associate Professor at United States University College of Nursing where he teaches and mentors students and maintains a private practice in a locate community clinic. Dr. Peraza-Smith has served as Treasurer for the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association and Co-Chair for the GNP Task Force. Heis the immediate Past President of the Tampa Bay Advanced Practice Nurse Council and previously served as the Council Secretary.
Dr. Peraza-Smith research interest includes managing pain in long term care, palliative symptom management of older adults with cognitive impairment, effective non-pharmacologic interventions for pain management in frail older adults,and LGBT issues in long term care.
