Assistant Professor

biography

I am born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine. I moved to USA in 2001. I graduated with a Master’s degree in physics in 2003, and received my Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine in 2007. At Baylor, I conducted research on the impact of environment sensation (specifically olfaction and innate immune response) on behavior, metabolism and longevity of fruit flies Drosophila melanogaster. After completing my Ph.D. studies I was recruited to Dr. Lenny Guarente’s lab at MIT to research the role of SIRT1 in neurogenesis and activity of neuronal stem cells. In 2013 I started to run my own laboratory at Cornell, where we continue studying processes involved in  aging, neurogenesis, and activity of stem cells. My laboratory uses a diverse range of techniques to study the processes of neurodevelopment and behavior determination. Additionally we are interested in events that take place when organisms age and the development of interventions to ameliorate resulting age-associated diseases.
